Lower instalment versus total repayment

Look beyond the monthly payment to understand the full commitment.

A lower instalment can give monthly breathing room while costing more overall. Compare the payment, number of months and total repayment separately.

Relief is useful, but it is not the whole comparison

If the month is tight, a smaller payment can matter. The tradeoff is how long you remain committed and what you pay across that period. A monthly difference should be described as monthly relief—not automatically savings.

For consolidation, establish which old payments stop and which stay. Comparing a new payment with all your old debts is misleading when only some debts are being settled.

Make the amounts comparable

  • Use the old debts’ remaining scheduled payments, not the original repayment from years ago.
  • Use dated settlement quotations to confirm what the new financing must cover. An outstanding report balance is not necessarily that quotation.
  • Include the new repayment schedule and applicable costs. Compare like-for-like debt coverage; separate additional cash or unrelated debts.

Fictional example

Selected old debts · 24 months remaining
RM2,400 × 24 = RM57,600
New illustration · 36 months
RM1,700 × 36 = RM61,200
Other monthly payments · unchanged
RM600
Overall monthly payments before / after
RM3,000 / RM2,300

Fictional comparison: assume fixed schedules, no fees, the new financing fully settles the selected old debts at matching settlement amounts, and no additional cash is taken. Monthly relief is RM700. New scheduled repayment is RM3,600 more and continues 12 months longer. The unchanged RM600 is included once on each side.

This may still be worth discussing if monthly relief is the priority, but it is not a lower-cost claim. If a debt is variable, ends sooner or is only partly replaced, these totals would need a different comparison.

What to do next

Before you have an offer, identify the debts you want to replace, their remaining terms and why you want a change. You do not need to enter invented terms into a tool.

Once terms are available, request the repayment schedule and itemised costs. If any part is missing, say the total comparison is incomplete rather than filling in a favourable assumption.

Ask: “How much will I pay each month, how long will I pay, and what will I pay in total for the debts actually replaced?” SunLiTe can help explain an actual offer without a compulsory worksheet.
