Flat rate versus effective rate
Understand the financing rate you are being quoted.
A flat rate and an effective rate describe cost differently. Do not compare their percentages as though they use the same basis.
What the two labels mean
For a simple flat-rate loan, interest is calculated using the original principal over the stated term, even as repayments reduce what you owe. An effective rate reflects the cost against the repayment pattern and reducing amount over time. Check the precise definition in the product disclosure.
A smaller flat-rate number is not automatically cheaper than a larger effective-rate number. Rate basis, payment timing, fees and product structure affect the comparison. Islamic financing disclosures may use profit-rate terms; read the product’s own explanation rather than assuming a conventional calculation applies unchanged.
Read the schedule alongside the rate
- Confirm whether the quoted rate is flat, effective, fixed or variable. “Fixed” alone tells you it does not vary under the stated terms, not everything about its cost basis.
- Request the monthly repayment, number of payments and total scheduled repayment for the same amount and term.
- Check fees and whether insurance or takaful is optional or required. Do not compare two offers with different usable amounts as if their rates settle the decision.
Fictional example
- Illustrative principal / term
- RM12,000 / 2 years
- Hypothetical annual flat rate
- 6%
- Simple flat interest
- RM12,000 × 6% × 2 = RM1,440
- Total / monthly repayment
- RM13,440 / RM560 × 24
Fictional example: assume a conventional loan with simple flat interest, equal monthly payments and no fees. It illustrates that RM12,000 + RM1,440 = RM13,440. The 6% here is not an effective rate, a current bank offer or a universal conversion formula.
The official personal-loan disclosure linked below presents fixed-rate calculation and effective-rate information for its own product. Use that distinction to ask better questions—not to assume this example’s rate is available to you.
What to do next
Ask the provider to state the effective rate where relevant and explain what costs it includes. Compare current written disclosures, not an advertisement’s headline alone.
If you cannot tell the basis, pause the comparison and ask for it in writing. You can still understand the monthly and total amounts before calculating anything yourself.
SunLiTe can help you read an offer’s rate, schedule and charges. We do not publish a bank-rate ranking or decide suitability from a rate percentage alone.
